The Department of Theatre & Performance, AMPD at York University invites highly qualified applicants to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Design for Performance at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023.
York University’s Department of Theatre & Performance is one of the largest and most comprehensive theatre programs in Canada. York is located in Toronto, the world's third largest centre for English language theatre. The Department offers dynamic BA, BFA, MA, MFA and PhD degrees. We combine in-depth academic studies and rigorous practical training; and we explore all aspects of theatre and performance through our leading-edge curriculum and a wide range of specialized, professional facilities for performance. Candidate Qualifications:
Degree:
• MFA, PhD or MA with extensive professional experience is required by the start of the appointment, with professional design experience in either stage or costume design, or both, for the live performing arts.
We acknowledge that within higher education in Canada, traditional or conventional academic pathways in research can reinforce biases in the filling of faculty posts. We therefore strongly encourage applications that challenge traditional notions of scholarship, research, and teaching, and recognize that excellence may come in many forms.
Research/Practice Expertise:
• A clearly articulated statement of research, research creation, or professional practice and specialization in either stage or costume design, or both, for the live performing arts.
• Research excellence or promise of research excellence at a recognized international calibre, as evident in: the research statement and creative interests; a record of productions, presentation, and publications as may be relevant; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.
• Outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research or research creation at the highest level.
Teaching:
• Excellence or promise of excellence in teaching university-level courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as evident in the teaching statement, past accomplishments, and pedagogical innovations (e.g., in one or more of areas such as experiential education, technology enhanced learning, community-based learning); teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
• Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies, given that the position will include graduate teaching and supervision.
Additional:
• We encourage applications from candidates who can integrate digital technologies in the live and digital performing arts (e.g., virtual stage design, digital costume and character design, participatory/interactive technology, digital integration in distance collaboration) alongside excellent material practice skills across a range of contexts, such as stage, screen, site-specific, among others.
