Department of Dance, School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design

The School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) at York University, Toronto, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Screendance in the Department of Dance. This position, subject to budgetary approval, will commence July 1, 2017.

One of North America's leading schools for the arts, AMPD offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Dance, Design, Computational Arts, Cinema and Media Arts, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, Art History, Media Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies. AMPD's Department of Dance is Canada's largest and most comprehensive university dance program, educating leaders in choreography, the moving body and new technologies.

The successful candidate will have a dynamic and innovative artistic and scholarly dance practice that integrates with the Department's forward-looking discourse, in regards to the moving body and motion media. The successful candidate will have extensive artistic and demonstrable expertise in the areas of Screendance, choreography, technique, performance, and contemporary media technologies, both aesthetic and creative, as a component of an interactive, hybridized arts practice. This position will further expand curriculum that addresses contemporary dance through socially engaged processes. A key element of this position will be a commitment to the expansion of dance pedagogy through the development of blended and technology-enhanced courses.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or PhD equivalent (minimum of MFA and a substantial professional record of creative activity) in the areas of Dance, Choreography, Cinema, Digital Media or a closely related field. Evidence of excellence in teaching, or the potential for excellence in teaching, at a post-secondary institution is required. The successful candidate will have an existing body of work that demonstrates their interest and expertise in the moving body, choreography and digital media (preferably Screendance) and be familiar with wearable technologies, data imaginaries and somatics. The successful candidate must have an outstanding research record, experience working with undergraduate and graduate students and be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Preference will be given to applicants whose research includes theatre and live performance. The ability to teach a technique and mentor emerging dance artists would be additional skills that fit within the mandate for the Department of Dance. The candidate is expected to provide leadership by fostering collaborative research, securing external funding, making links across AMPD, supervising graduate students, and generating national and international academic, community and industry partnerships.
