Two Faculty Positions in Neuroscience – York University

As a key part of a major University-wide initiative in neuroscience, the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Health at York University plan to make two tenure-stream faculty hires. The incumbents will establish technology-intensive, state-of-the art research programs and engage in collaborative projects that require teams of researchers with advanced skill sets and specialized equipment. These are Research Enhanced Faculty positions partially funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) Vision: Science to Application (VISTA) program http://vista.info.yorku.ca/. The applicants will receive enhanced start-up funding, additional annual research funds, a reduced undergraduate teaching load, and competitive access to general VISTA research and training funds. They will also contribute to York's teaching and research priorities in the life sciences, and participate in developing an inter-Faculty Neuroscience Program at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Department of Biology, Faculty of Science

The Department of Biology invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in neuroscience at the level of Assistant, Associate or Full Professor. Individuals whose research is in the area of systems neuroscience or cognitive neuroscience with a focus on vision are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will join colleagues in the Department with established programs in cell and molecular biology, animal physiology, neurophysiology and molecular & cellular neurobiology. Further information about the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science can be found at http://science.yorku.ca/.

We seek candidates with active, innovative neuroscience research programs who use in-vivo animal models and/or in vitro models. We particularly welcome applications from scientists who work with non-human primates and advanced technologies to understand neuronal circuits and plasticity mechanisms, or those developing novel tools to interrogate the fundamental principles that underlie brain function.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in neuroscience or a closely related discipline. The incumbent will have an outstanding career record including training and research awards and publications in high-quality refereed journals, and clear evidence of cross-disciplinary collaboration. The incumbent is expected to have an original and innovative independent research program in neuroscience and is also expected to have demonstrated excellence in teaching and graduate supervision and be eligible for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The start date for the position is January 1, 2018 (with some flexibility). Applicants should send a curriculum vitae, an outline of their research plans, a statement of teaching philosophy and experience, and single copies of three publications, and arrange for three signed letters of reference, to be received by July 1, 2017 to Chair, Neuroscience Search Committee, Department of Biology, York University, 4700 Keele St., Toronto, Ontario M3J 1P3, Canada. Applications may be sent electronically to Ms. Pamela Fernandes (pamf@yorku.ca).

The successful candidate will hold a PhD in psychology or related discipline. The applicant will combine leading-edge neurophysiological techniques (such as single/multi-neuron recording) and behavioral recordings to study the neural basis of visual functions in primates such as perception, cognition, sensorimotor integration, and/or multisensory integration. We particularly encourage candidates who use and/or develop innovative technologies. The faculty member who fills this position is expected to play a key leadership role in the design, development, and operation of a new world-class primate research facility and to collaborate and interact with other VISTA investigators and partners. The successful applicant should have an outstanding research record demonstrating scholarly eminence, a proven ability to attract substantial peer-reviewed external research funding, and train successful graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
