Assistant Lecturer in Astronomy and Physics and Observatory Coordinator at York University
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University in Toronto, Canada invites applications for a teaching stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream to commence July 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses and to provide leadership in enhancing teaching and learning through curricular development and pedagogical innovation.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have experience with technology and software related to astronomical observing facilities and associated instrumentation, managing an observing facility, and be able to work with specialists in machining, electronics, and software development.
The successful candidate will be expected to assume technical leadership of the Allan I. Carswell Astronomical Observatory. The Observatory is home to a 1 meter telescope, the largest on any Canadian campus, and other smaller aperture telescopes. The Observatory supports a number of undergraduate and graduate courses and research projects, as well as education and public outreach initiatives that are coordinated by the Allan I. Carswell Chair for the Public Understanding of Astronomy and with whom the candidate will collaborate in the promotion of astronomy education and outreach. The training of students using the telescopes in support of any course or outreach initiative will be the responsibility of the appointee.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence or clear potential for excellence in developing, teaching and assessing university-level courses in astronomy and physics at the undergraduate level, building upon the strong foundation of the Department's "learning through practice" mission. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
On average, half of the teaching will be devoted to courses offered by the Division of Natural Science (in the Department of Science and Technology Studies) to non-science majors. The appointee will be expected to take on a leadership role to innovate teaching methodologies in introductory astronomy and physics courses for interdisciplinary audiences, including technology enhanced learning, experiential education, and inquiry-driven laboratory activities. Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is an asset.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
