The Writing Department in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University, invites applications from qualified candidates working in the area of Digital Writing at the intersection of writing, communication, rhetoric, genre, and digital technologies for a tenure-track, professorial-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2019.
Applicants must have, by the time of the appointment's commencement, a PhD in a writing-related discipline, with demonstrable excellence, or promise of excellence, in scholarly research and teaching. Although the Writing Department is not directly affiliated with any graduate program, the successful applicant should be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and be prepared to participate actively in one or more of York's related graduate programs: Communication & Culture; English; Social & Political Thought; Gender, Feminist, and Women's Studies; &c.
The Writing Department houses the honours programs in Professional Writing and English & Professional Writing, the pan-University Writing Centre, and its ESL-centred adjunct, the Open Learning Centre. Recently appraised as "nearly unique in Canada," Professional Writing "is an unusually forward-looking program that has the potential to offer students an education particularly suited to the complex world of the twenty-first century".
The successful candidate will immediately, or very soon, serve as the lead in the Department's Writing in Digital Communities of Practice area, and should have research and teaching interests focusing on the transformations wrought upon the practice of writing by the transition to the digital era. The candidate will be expected to range broadly in this rapidly transforming field, and demonstrate the relevance of their scholarly work for students of professional writing.
Experience in university-level writing teaching is a considerable asset as is recent practical experience in digital communications. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology-enhanced learning is preferred.
