The Writing Department in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University, invites applications from qualified STEM Writing Specialists for a tenure-track, professorial-stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor to commence July 1, 2019. Applicants must have, by the time of the appointment's commencement, a PhD in a writing-related or STEM discipline with an emphasis on STEM writing and/or writing pedagogy, with demonstrable excellence, or promise of excellence, in scholarly research and teaching. Although the Writing Department is not directly affiliated with any graduate program, the successful applicant should be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and prepared to participate actively in a graduate program directly related to the candidate's disciplinary expertise.

The Writing Department houses the honours programs in Professional Writing, the pan-University Writing Centre, one of the largest faculty-led Centres in Canada, and its ESL-centred adjunct, the Open Learning Centre. The addition of a STEM Writing Specialist will enhance both our programs' breadth and the range of the Centre’s disciplinary expertise.

The successful candidate will immediately, or very soon, participate actively in the Department's efforts to develop and expand STEM elements within the department’s programs and in its building of inter-faculty collaborations that will augment both the study and the practice of writing in STEM fields at York. The candidate should have broad ranging and interdisciplinary research and teaching interests that bring into conversation the knowledge-making and communications practices of STEM disciplines and writing pedagogy. Experience in university-level writing teaching is a considerable asset, as are practical experience in curriculum design and recent experience of transdisciplinary collaborations. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology-enhanced learning is preferred.
