The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York University in Toronto, Canada invites applications for a professorial stream tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in Theoretical Physics, to commence July 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. Applicants should be theorists with an ongoing program of research in one or more of the following areas: elementary particle physics, astro-particle physics, and/or cosmology.
York is the third largest university in Canada, with a strong community of 53,000 students with 7,000 faculty and administrative staff. York's location in the greater Toronto area facilitates opportunities for interaction with many nearby universities and research institutes. York University champions new ways of thinking that drive teaching and research excellence. Through cross-disciplinary programming, innovative course design, diverse experiential learning and a supportive community environment, York students receive the education they need to create big ideas that make an impact on the world.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy at York has strong research groups in high energy physics, astronomy/astrophysics, atomic/molecular/optical physics (including laser physics), and biophysics. Faculty regularly engage and collaborate with researchers at CERN, the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics, Fermilab, the Fields Institute, the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, J-PARC, and TRIUMF. Candidates' research should complement the Department's existing theoretical research (e.g., early universe, QCD, astro-particle, or BSM physics), experimental high energy physics programs (e.g. ATLAS, T2K, DUNE), or observational efforts (e.g., optical, IR, radio, CMB). Further information about the Department and the University can be found at http://www.physics.yorku.ca .
Applicants must have a PhD in Physics or a related discipline along with relevant postdoctoral experience and be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program, supervise graduate students, foster research linkages within and beyond York, and play an active role in widely promoting York's endeavours in research and education. Candidates must show excellence or promise of excellence in the teaching of physics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology-enhanced learning is an asset.
