The Department of Design, York University invites applications for a teaching stream position in Design Studies at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream to commence July 1, 2019. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses and to provide leadership in teaching and learning through curricular and program development and pedagogical innovation via technology enhanced learning.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD by the start date in a design disciplinary affiliation which may include history, cultural studies, curatorial studies, media studies, philosophy of technology, or some other area relevant to design is required. Applicants should have a minimum of two years of professional or academic experience.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or clear potential for excellence in teaching university-level courses, a strong commitment to pedagogy and student success and the capacity to bring both relevant and current theoretical and practical focus to teaching, learning and program design in Design Studies. The successful candidate will study both the role of the designer as a creative individual in his/her artistic and socio-cultural context, and how historical understanding of objects and processes can contribute to the understanding of design making and design’s future. The position considers three related theoretical areas: (1) design history, which includes history of production, transmission, and consumption of artefacts, canonical designers and their contributions (2) culture and society, which comprises how design shapes our cultures and societies, material and digital cultures, cultural values and practices, cultural representation and framing, social regulation and identity; and (3) design criticism, which includes design’s responsibility to society, and its complicity in social media.

This teaching-focused (alternate stream) position will involve teaching and curriculum development and service contributions including administrative and committee work. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
