The Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) at York University invites applications for a Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream appointment in Production/Stage Management for Live Events. The successful candidate will have a dynamic and innovative arts management practice with a focus on the production of live events that integrates and encompasses the expanded field of theatrical performance and spectacle ranging from regional theatre to music festivals, to major operas, to stadium scale ceremonies (e.g. Olympics, Super Bowl). The successful candidate will have extensive and demonstrable expertise in the field of live event management and production, artistic coordination, international producing, technical preparation, best practices in health and safety, broadcast technology and coordination, visa coordination, permits, and human resources. Alternate stream positions place a strong emphasis on teaching and pedagogical innovation with a 3.5 teaching load. In keeping with this emphasis, this position will further expand curriculum that addresses contemporary production across traditional live performance categories, including the integration of broadcast and recorded presentation. Evidence of excellence in teaching, or the potential for excellence in teaching, at a post-secondary institution is required. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning is preferred. Key elements will be to teach production management, career management and stage management in the arts and a commitment to the expansion of theatre pedagogy through the development of blended and technology-enhanced courses.
The successful candidate will have an appropriate terminal degree (MFA), or equivalent (e.g. substantial record of professional activity) in the areas of Theatre, Management, or a closely related field. The ability to teach a technique and mentor emerging theatre artists would be additional skills that fit within the mandate of the Department of Theatre. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core (lecture) and elective (seminar) courses in stage management, general management and career management at the undergraduate and graduate levels, to develop new curriculum in the area of production practicum and to participate actively in supporting the production of the Theatre@York season. Candidates with extensive experience in live performance management are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
