The Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) at York University invites applications for a Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream level appointment in Lighting and Media for Live Events. The position will commence July 1, 2019. All positions at York University are subject to budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will have a dynamic and innovative arts design and technical practice background with a focus on sound, lighting and projections for live events that integrates and encompasses the expanded field of theatrical performance and spectacle ranging from regional theatre, to music festivals, to major operas, to stadium scale ceremonies (e.g. Olympics, Super Bowl). The successful candidate will have extensive and demonstrable technical and creative experience and expertise in the fields of sound, lighting and projections, as well as best practices in health and safety. Alternate stream positions place a strong emphasis on teaching and pedagogical innovation with a 3.5 teaching load. In keeping with this emphasis, this position will further expand curriculum that addresses digital media in live performance. Evidence of excellence in teaching, or the potential for excellence in teaching, at a post-secondary institution is required. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning is preferred. A key element of this position will be a commitment to the expansion of theatre pedagogy through the development of blended and technology-enhanced courses.

The successful candidate will have an appropriate terminal degree (MFA), or equivalent (e.g. substantial professional record of creative activity) in the areas of Theatre, media in live performance, or a closely related field. The ability to teach a technique and mentor emerging theatre artists would be additional skills that fit within the mandate for the Department of Theatre. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses in: sound, lighting and projections technology and design, to develop new curriculum in the area of production practicum and to participate actively in supporting the production of the Theatre@York season. Candidates with extensive experience in the entertainment industry are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
