The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University, invites applications for a tenure-track Professorial Stream position at the Assistant Professor level in Big Data and Public Sociology to commence July 1st, 2020. Candidates must demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in teaching, service and in scholarly research, and have produced original scholarly research appropriate to their stage of career. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD in Sociology or a related field is required. We are seeking a sociologist specializing in digital sociology, notably as it relates to the social implications of digital technologies and platforms. Secondary areas of specialization are open but we are particularly interested in the critical study of big data, algorithms, digital networks, organizations, and actors as they relate to health, social media platforms and corporations, surveillance, and digital culture. Candidates with methodological skills pertinent to the collection and analysis of digital data, such as computational social science, social network analysis, natural language processing, digital ethnographies, and/or data visualization, are preferred.

The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning is preferred.
