The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Indigeneity and Decolonisation at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level, to commence July 1, 2021. Sociology at York has a long tradition of critically informed, community-engaged and public sociological research and teaching driven by efforts to challenge social inequalities. We recognise that the strength of our program emanates from the diversity of our faculty and student body and we seek a candidate who can enhance our critical reach in the area of Indigeneity and Decolonisation. We seek a candidate whose research is grounded in Indigenous sociological perspectives and examines processes of colonisation and decolonisation in Canada, while remaining attentive to issues of Indigenous survival, resistance, resurgence, refusal, futurity, and to the colonising potential of the practices and processes of research itself. The area of research specialization is open and may include Indigenous governance and sovereignty; land, knowledges, and extraction; urban Indigeneity; Indigenous cultural production; digitalization and Indigenous worlds; Indigenous activism and/or futurity; Indigenous research paradigms; and processes of decolonisation. In addition to teaching existing courses, we seek a candidate who can develop new courses in the department that mobilize critical Indigenous content, theories, ontologies and/or methodologies. A record of engaged collaboration with, and commitment to, working with Indigenous communities and organizations in Canada is strongly desired.
A PhD in hand or close to completion in Sociology or a related discipline is required by the start date. Applicants must have a clearly articulated program of research and a record of accomplishments appropriate to their stage of career. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level. Applicants must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence appropriate to their stage of career as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications or forthcoming publications; research creation; conference presentations; awards and accolades. Applicants should also provide evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching appropriate to their stage of career at the undergraduate and graduate levels through: the teaching statement; potential courses in Indigeneity and Decolonisation; and teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations, including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning. The position will involve undergraduate teaching as well as graduate teaching and supervision and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
