The Department of Social Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Inequality, Global Labour Movements and Workplace Democracy at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2021. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. by July 1, 2021 in a relevant social science discipline, with a research focus on work and labour studies. We are seeking a critical interdisciplinary scholar, with demonstrated excellence or the promise of excellence in research and teaching. Applicants must have a clearly articulated program of critical interdisciplinary research and specialize in one or more of the following areas: labour relations, workplace inequality; global labour movements and workplace democracy.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or potential for excellence as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publication (or forthcoming publications) appropriate to career stage; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong letters of recommendation.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a critical interdisciplinary approach to teaching, and the ability to teach one or more of the following courses: The Future of Work; Labour and Globalization; Labour Relations; Global Living Wage Movements; and Mobile Worlds: Work, Labour and Power in the Global Era. Preference will be given to candidates engaged in labour and community embedded learning, including but not limited to links with trade unions and other workers’ justice organizations. Demonstrated experience with experiential education and technology enhanced learning, curricular planning, large course management and working with teaching assistants is an asset.

Evidence of excellence or the promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments; teaching evaluations; and reference letters. The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop undergraduate courses in the Work and Labour Studies program, assume pedagogical leadership and service roles in the Department of Social Science, and to participate in the University's Global Labour Research Centre. The position may involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
