The Department of Visual Arts and Art History in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in African Art and Visual Culture at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
This opportunity is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (for example Africans and African heritage people from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). A PhD in Visual Arts or a related area or PhD equivalent, such as an MA or MFA and a substantial record of professional experience, with a focus on African art and visual culture is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research and specialization in any region of Africa or the African Diaspora, and any time period, including the contemporary moment. Expertise in museum/curatorial studies would be considered an asset given the importance of African art within museum/curatorial studies.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, externally funded research or research creation at the highest level.
Evidence of or the promise of internationally recognized research excellence may be demonstrated through: the research statement; substantial record of recent professional experience; a record of reviewed publications (or forthcoming publications); presentations at major conferences and/or artistic venues; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees.
The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
The successful candidate will be able to teach a range of courses from an introductory survey of African Art through to advanced lecture and seminar courses in their areas of expertise, including those at the graduate level. This scholar would provide instruction in historical and contemporary African art, including colonial and postcolonial representations in the arts and visual cultures of Africa.
It is expected that the successful candidate will strengthen connections with the African Studies Program at York, with other departments in the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design, and with the wider community.
The Visual Arts Department of York University is one of the leaders in art history and art practice in Canada.
