The Department of Dance, in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a teaching stream contractually limited appointment in Popular Dance at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream to commence July 1, 2022 for a three-year term. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and MFA graduate courses and to provide support in the department’s initiatives to enhance teaching and learning in our physical practice courses through pedagogical innovation and curricular and departmental development. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
A PhD in Dance or a related field or PhD equivalent such as an MFA with a substantial record of professional experience in Popular Dance is required.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or clear potential for excellence in teaching university-level courses through the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education, technology enhanced learning and community-based learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will also have a strong commitment to pedagogy focused on student satisfaction and success. Our ideal candidate will incorporate current theoretical and practice-based frames of references to train the dance-artist of today and tomorrow, with an emphasis on equity and inclusion. We are particularly interested in artists who have significant experience working with IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour) dance artists and groups, and who can contribute to the diverse perspective among our faculty. They will demonstrate rigorous, professional, safe, and healthy practice of dance in our BFA and MFA programs. The successful candidate is an active dance artist with professional experience in the specific areas of popular dance teaching, creation, performance, and/or related complementary fields. The candidate should have depth of physical training and choreographic experience in a popular dance form that has a global appeal and relevance, such as hip hop, jazz, ballroom dancing, and other forms related to decolonial practices, etc. Ideally, this candidate will contribute expertise to our contemporary and global dance areas.
As a Department within the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, we further welcome a candidate who has additional expertise in enhanced digital and technological learning which is fast changing the opportunities for growth in the field of dance. Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
