Computational Creativity & Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Computational Arts in the School of Arts, Media, Performance, and Design at York University
The Department of Computational Arts in the School of Arts, Media, Performance, and Design at York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Computational Creativity & Artificial Intelligence in Computational Arts at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
We seek a strong creative researcher whose research and creative practice develops computational creativity, artificial intelligence and/or machine learning within computational arts. A candidate would be one who undertakes technological practice as a form of artistic technique, with an ongoing program of research and specialization related to artificial intelligence and its related fields.
The profile of the ideal candidate is a practising artist, creative researcher, and creative coder whose computationally-based work is disseminated or realized through platforms and cultural contexts where the potential and boundaries of artificial intelligence and art are being tested. Diversity, heterogeneity, and representation within Artificial Intelligence and computational arts are urgent, and preference will be given to candidates addressing these issues through their research. Candidates who self-identify as visible minorities of a racialized group, women, Aboriginal or Indigenous persons, and persons with disabilities, are especially encouraged to apply. The Department of Computational Arts has an expansive and forward-looking perspective on Artificial Intelligence both through exploration of a range of delivery platforms and through examination of new and cutting edge trends. These include queer and feminist approaches to AI, code bias and data justice, critical race, decolonial, and Indigenous approaches to the use of AI with the goal of working toward more equitable and sustainable futures; as well as the incorporation of interdisciplinary approaches to machine learning, computational creativity, generative art, interactive installation art, procedural generation in games, games and game-related art, agent-based systems, computer vision, autonomous robotics, natural language processing, biologically-inspired computing, non-human cognition, art-science, ethics of artificial intelligence, worldmaking, and/or visualization.
Applicants will have a clearly articulated program of research creation, and/or professional practice. Typically, a PhD, or a PhD equivalent (such as an MA/MFA with a substantial record of professional experience), related to practice in Computational Arts, with work that emphasizes computational creativity and/or artificial intelligence is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence, or promise of excellence, in research and in teaching. We acknowledge that within higher education, traditional or conventional academic pathways in research can reinforce biases in the filling of faculty posts. Applications are encouraged from candidates that may not fit all of the above qualifications and that challenge our ideas of teaching, scholarship and research of which we may be unconscious. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring experience in facilitating equity, diversity and inclusion practices within their teaching and curricular development.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research creation at the highest level.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence, or promise of research excellence, of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a capacity to teach and provide leadership in curriculum development in studio-based Computational Arts courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, including foundational capacity in artificial intelligence. Primary teaching will take place in the Digital Media undergraduate and graduate programs, both joint programs between the Department of Computational Arts in AMPD, and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the Lassonde School of Engineering.
The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
Evidence of excellence, or promise of excellence, in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
