Department Chair, Department of Design, School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, York University

The Department of Design, School of the Arts, Media, Performance, and Design, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream, tenured appointment as Department Chair specializing in User Experience Design or Service Design, at the Associate or Full Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. The Chair role is assigned for a 3-year, renewable term and typically rotates among tenured faculty members in the Department. The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The Department of Design is a leader in design education in Canada with newly reimagined curricula in both its undergraduate and graduate programs to prepare design professionals for success in both industry and academia. We are looking to further develop our industry-leading user experience design focus, while delivering sustainable process-oriented systems and products relevant to commercial and social needs.

A PhD or PhD equivalent typically an MDES/MA/MFA with a substantial record in professional or academic experience related to User Experience Design or Service Design is required along with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research [or research creation, or professional practice], a CV and a portfolio (or portfolio URL) and/or dossier demonstrating an established record of excellent scholarly research and/or professional projects, where relevant; and a minimum of 5 years academic experience. We seek a collaborative leader, who will help integrate and enhance ongoing research in the department, expand collaborations across York University, and build external partnerships. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role in shaping new directions in the growth areas of User Experience Design and Service Design.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.

We also recognize the effects the pandemic may have had on the continuity of a prospective applicant’s bona fides and acknowledge that within higher education in Canada, traditional or conventional academic pathways in research can reinforce biases in the filling of faculty posts. We therefore encourage applications that may not fit this mold and challenge traditional notions of scholarship and research.

This position involves administrative work including recruitment planning, academic scheduling, faculty teaching assignments, hiring sessional instructors, departmental budgeting, student advising and managing the undergraduate program assessment.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
