The Writing Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Technical Communication at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD (by the start of the appointment) in Technical Communication, Professional Writing, Rhetoric, or a related field is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence (or promise of excellence for junior appointment) in research and in teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research with demonstrated interest in contemporary and emerging social justice-related issues in field, such as anti-racist, feminist, queer, or other culturally-sustaining theories, pedagogy, or approaches. Candidates may study these issues in any contemporary area of Technical Communication, including but not limited to areas such as Health, Medicine, and Science, digital impacts on the workplace, data sciences, or visualization. Experience in industry is an asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.

The successful candidate will contribute to building the Department’s focus on technical communication within our Programs with the potential for developing technical communication pathways beyond the department. A priority of pedagogy will be to advance our students’ critical thinking about writing in, for, and by technical areas. Experience or the demonstrated potential to administer a stream, program, or department-level administration is an asset.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international calibre as demonstrated in: the research statement; writing sample; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendation letters from referees of high standing.

The position may involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; diversity statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.

The Writing Department houses the honours programs in Professional Writing and English & Professional Writing, the pan-University Writing Centre, and its ESL-centred adjunct, the Open Learning Centre. The Professional Writing Program was recently appraised as “an unusually forward-looking program that has the potential to offer students an education particularly suited to the complex world of the twenty-first century.”
