The Writing Department, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a teaching stream tenure-track appointment in Book Publishing, the practices of editing and book production in both print and digital modes, at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream to commence July 1, 2022. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate courses and to provide creative educational leadership in enhancing teaching and learning through curricular and pedagogical innovation in the classroom and at the level of programs. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
Applicants must have an MA, MFA or other post-graduate degree and at least three years of recent in-house editing/publishing experience, with demonstrable excellence, or promise of excellence, in university-level teaching and service.
We seek a practicing editor with current or recent in-house experience of both copy and developmental editing, and demonstrable expertise in all phases of the development and production of book-length texts in the various media through which these are disseminated. Experience as a Managing or Executive Editor would be a considerable asset, as would be demonstrable ties to various sectors of the Canadian publishing industry. The successful candidate will be expected to be capable of assuming a leadership role in the Book Publishing area of concentration. Our programs emphasize the meeting points of the theoretical and the applied, so practitioners who are fluent in the history and technology of the book, and the transformations wrought upon that technology by the advent of the digital age will be preferred. Potential contributions to high priority areas such as experiential education, especially work-integrated learning, and technology-enhanced learning are also preferred qualifications.
The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence (potential or achieved) in teaching university-level courses through a teaching statement, teaching portfolio, sample syllabi, teaching evaluations, and strong letters of reference. We are especially interested in seeing pedagogical accomplishments and innovations in high priority areas such as experiential education, technology enhanced learning, and community-based learning in the teaching portfolio. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to high-impact pedagogical practices and student success; the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to editing and book production teaching, learning and curriculum design; and good judgment and a reflective approach to innovation in teaching. Experience with curriculum development and program design is preferred. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
The Writing Department houses the honours programs in Professional Writing and English & Professional Writing, the pan-University Writing Centre, and its ESL-centred adjunct, the Open Learning Centre. Our Professional Writing Program was recently appraised as “an unusually forward-looking program that has the potential to offer students an education particularly suited to the complex world of the twenty-first century.”
