The School of Kinesiology and Health Science, York University, invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track position in Physical Culture and Health Technologies in Datafied Societies at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor level, to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and demonstrated competencies. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
We seek a candidate with expertise in the critical socio-cultural study of health and/or physical culture with a focus on digital studies/data science. Expertise in any of the following, as related to health and/or physical culture, is welcome: surveillance technologies; technology policy; digital archival work; AI and algorithmic bias; social media analysis; analytics; digital activism; data justice; digital methodologies; and/or other related areas. Competencies in methodologies that are grounded in principles of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization would be considered an asset.
Candidates must hold a PhD (or have successfully completed all doctoral degree requirements within 6 months of their appointment) in Kinesiology or a relevant discipline (e.g., Physical Education, Science and Technology Studies, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Health, Political Science, Indigenous Studies, Gender Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, etc.) so long as their expertise is focused on critical socio-cultural study of health and/or physical culture with a focus on digital studies/data science. Post-doctoral experience preferred.
Additionally, candidates must demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in:
(1) scholarly research of a recognized international calibre – as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications (or forthcoming publications) and presentations at major conferences, research funding, non-peer reviewed publications, policy documents, or other knowledge mobilization activities in non-traditional and non-academic domains, awards and accolades, and strong recommendations from referees of high standing;
(2) teaching and/or supervision at the undergraduate and/or graduate level – as evidenced by ability to mentor and provide research training to students and/or teaching awards; and strengths and abilities in increasing equity, diversity, and inclusion in curricula (including, but not limited to, decolonial, transnational, and Indigenous theories and praxis), and/or supporting diverse students. Pedagogical innovation and competency in experiential education and/or technology-enhanced learning is preferred.
The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
