Department of Social Science

The Department of Social Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a one-year teaching stream contractually limited appointment at the level of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Health & Society to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The successful candidate will hold a Ph.D., by July 1, 2022, in one of the social sciences, the humanities or an interdisciplinary field, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching which qualifies them to teach multiple interdisciplinary courses in the Health & Society Program. Candidates must demonstrate excellence or the promise of excellence in teaching in at least one of the following courses: Drugs & Society (SOSC 3118), Race & Health (SOSC 3121), and Indigenous Health & Healing (SOSC 3921). Candidates must also demonstrate their ability to teach in two of the following HESO “core” (required) courses: Health Controversies (SOSC 1801), Strategies of Social Science Research (SOSC 3993), and Health & Society Seminar (SOSC 4140). Preference will be given to those candidates who demonstrate superior abilities in teaching and managing large courses with teaching assistants at the first-and second-year level as well as smaller courses at the upper levels. Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
