The Department of Anthropology, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Public Anthropology at the Assistant level, to commence July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
A PhD in Social-Cultural Anthropology by July 1, 2023 is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research and teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research and ethnographic expertise in the areas of public anthropology, community engagement, public activism, and/or advocacy. Preference will be given to candidates who bring a critical perspective on issues of public interest and policy, which may include climate change, environment, food, human rights, labor and working conditions, among others.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded research and/or research creation at the highest level. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence, as demonstrated in: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) in significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing. In the cover letter, candidates must address how their research intersects with public anthropology.
The position will involve undergraduate and graduate teaching, and graduate supervision. The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and is expected to teach courses that enhance the Public Anthropology curricula.
Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence will be provided through: statement of teaching philosophy; list of new or proposed courses relevant to public anthropology; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning.
