The Department of Social Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Critical Development Studies at the Assistant level, to commence July 1, 2023. A PhD, or a PhD in hand by July 1, 2023 in a relevant social science discipline or interdisciplinary degree program is required, with a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in research, and teaching. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of interdisciplinary research and specialize in food security and sovereignty and/or climate change and its impact on agriculture. We are particularly interested in critical development scholars with a focus on addressing gender-related vulnerabilities; and/or community resilience and responses; and/or risks assessment and vulnerabilities, and/or adaptation and mitigation options. Candidates must also possess a solid command of development theory and the intellectual history of development as a field of enquiry; and first-hand experience conducting fieldwork in the Global South. Preference will be given to candidates with a familiarity with mixed-methods approaches to research.
The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, externally funded research.
Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence to be demonstrated through a combination of the following elements: the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) appropriate to career stage; presentations at major conferences; awards; and letters of recommendation.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses in their area of specialization, as well as teach core courses in the International Development Studies (IDS) and Development Studies Programs (DVST), including one or more of the following: Conceptual Foundations of Development; Historical and Institutional Foundations of Development; Introduction to International Development Studies; and Development Studies Research Methods. The successful candidate will undertake responsibility for graduate supervision and therefore must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Demonstrated ability to teach large interdisciplinary lecture courses and small seminar courses will be considered an asset.
Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the research and teaching statements; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; presentations at major conferences; awards; teaching evaluations; and letters of reference.
