On event days, hours of work will be scheduled on an event-by-event basis (recognizing that some events may span multiple days), with shifts typically falling between the hours of 6:00 am and 12:00 am, although earlier call times or later end times may be required.

Purpose:
This position provides technical services in support of the academic mission of the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design, (AMPD), Departments of Dance, Music, Theatre and occasionally the Departments of Design, Film and Visual Arts & Digital Media program. This position oversees technical aspects of load-ins, set-ups, rehearsals, performances and load-outs (strikes); performs and/or monitors maintenance to theatrical systems; performs and/or monitors installation of stage equipment temporarily or permanently and ensures the security of the equipment and facilities. All technical services are provided in a professional manner with an emphasis on exemplary customer service. This position also provides technical services for Internal (York University) and External Clients.
 
Responsibilities:
ACADEMIC SUPPORT:
Acts as a resource supporting the delivery of curriculum providing expertise in the backstage components of stage production including but not limited to audio, audio recording, lighting, audio-visual, projection & display technology, carpentry, rigging, flying, automation, special effects and stage management. The curricular support is provided in a highly professional, student focused manner. Demonstrates to students the safe operating procedures involved with audio; audio recording; lighting; audio-visual; projection & display technology; carpentry; electrical equipment; working at height (catwalks, ladders, aerial work platforms); and working with theatrical rigging and fly systems. Adheres to safe operating procedures, techniques and materials in the context of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Ensures that duty of care regarding safe work practices is communicated to those using the space and equipment (i.e. protective devices or clothing, safety procedures and training that are required in the facilities). Participates in the mandatory health and safety training, and training courses specific to hazards relevant to their workplace. Communicates any health & safety issues to the General Manager, onsite faculty member(s), and/or FFA Manager of Facilities & Health and Safety as required. Contributes to improvements in the organization, equipping, and maintenance of teaching spaces including rehearsal studios, recording facilities, workshops and storage areas. Delivers and sets up equipment and assists faculty members and students in the use of such equipment. At the close of a production, supports faculty members and students in the removal (strike) of all theatre systems (audio, audio recording, lighting, scenery, audio-visual, projection & display technology, rigging, communication) and the restoration of the venue to a “neutral” state. Attends department meetings as required to report on relevant technical aspects of production. Percentage of time: 50%

CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CLIENTS:
Provides advice and information to clients in regard to procedures and methods to meet or surpass their expectations and vision of their event in a safe and efficient manner. Provides advice and guidance to casual employees; operates theatrical systems (audio, audio recording, communication, lighting, audio-visual, projection & display technology, rigging, fly, automation and special effects) and act as stage manager for events and performances when necessary. Provides technical services to all clients in a highly professional manner demonstrating exemplary customer service. Installs and operates audio systems including the recording of music and sound effects, audio playback, live sound reinforcement and theatrical communication systems. Installs stage lighting and operates lighting control systems. Installs audio-visual, projection and display technology equipment and operates audio-visual, projection and display technology systems. Installs and operates audio and video communication and program systems. Installs and oversees the installation of scenic elements. Installs and operates rigging systems. On a shared schedule with other staff, monitors events as the Lead Technician, leading a team of fulltime and casual technicians, ensuring safe and professional work practices; recording and submiting relevant event information including but not limited to hours worked and equipment used; fulfilling the role of stage manager for an event or performance. At the close of a production leads casual employees in the removal (strike) of all theatre systems (audio, audio recording, communication, lighting, audio-visual, projection & display technology, rigging, scenery, automation and special effects) and the restoration of the venue to a “neutral” state. Acts as a resource and demonstrates to casual employees the safe operating procedures involved with audio, audio recording, lighting, carpentry, audio-visual, projection & display technology and electrical equipment; working at height (catwalks, ladders, aerial work platforms); and rigging and fly systems. Inspects equipment and systems for functionality and hazards prior to operation. Informs Coordinator of Technical Services of any equipment or systems that are hazardous, malfunctioning and/or require service and removes offending equipment and systems from service. Modifies house lighting plots and and provides lighting in consultation with clients. Percentage of time: 25%

PROJECTS, MAINTENANCE AND SECURITY:
Conducts inspections and reports on the condition of equipment and systems. Performs basic maintenance and repairs to systems and equipment. Researches and reports on maintenance, replacement schedules, new equipment and procedures seeking efficiencies and best practices. Seeks and offers positive technical solutions that consider environmental sustainability. Advises Coordinator, Technical Services when stock of consumable materials is nearing depletion in order to have adequate time to replenish such stock. Consumable materials include but are not limited to: hardware, glue, paint, cleaning supplies, gel, gel frames, gobos, tape, batteries and light bulbs. Monitors the security of the facilities and equipment in order to minimize theft and damage. Ensures facilities are closed and locked properly when not in use; returns equipment to secure storage when not in use; keeps performance spaces and storage areas clean and in good order as per instructions from Coordinator of Technical Services; gathers and returns departments’ equipment to appropriate spaces. Demonstrates initiative by planning and executing assigned maintenance, building and refurbishment projects in an orderly, thoughtful and efficient manner. Works in a proactive manner anticipating and preparing for the next steps during a project. Keeps the Coordinator of Technical Services aware of progress and requirements. Percentage of time: 20%

Education:
Post secondary degree/certificate in theatre production or three (3) years of equivalent professional experience in addition to the experience listed below. Indepth knowledge of aspects of theatre production including stage management, audio, audio recording, communication systems, lighting, audio visual, scenery construction, rigging, flying, projection & display technology, automation and special effects is required. Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
 
Experience:
Three (3) years related experience (lighting, sound, technical direction) in a professional theatre or university environment. Experience with a variety performance types (Theatre, Music, Dance) is an asset.
 
Skills:
Demonstrated skills including: Dealing courteously and effectively with people. Excellent oral communication skills to clearly explain techniques and demonstrate use of equipment and safety procedures. Ability to accurately interpret and summarize information in a clear and concise manner. Good written communications skills. Excellent organizational skills including the ability to work independently, set priorities and meet deadlines.

Demonstrated technical skills: Ability to draft and read floor plans, lighting plots, electrical diagrams. Operation of audio equipment. Operation of lighting equipment. Operation of audio-visual, projection & display technology systems. Operation of carpentry shop tools. Operation of fly systems and rigging.

Demonstrated computer skills including: Basic Wordprocessing (ie. MS Word). Basic Spreadsheet software (ie. MS Excel). Intermediate Presentation software (ie. MS Powerpoint). Email & Calendar (ie. Lotus Notes), Internet (ie. Firefox). CAD software (ie.Vectorworks) and / or multimedia playback software (ie.Q Lab) and / or digital audio software (ie. ProTools) are assets.

Summer Hours: Same as above.
Overtime Availability in this Position: Requests to work overtime may occur periodically throughout the year.
Peak Period Definition: October, November, January to May.
Vacation Restriction Definition: September up to and including November, January up to and including June, vacation may be restricted due to operational requirements and / or other staff approved absences.
