Purpose:
To provide technical support to the research laboratories by maintaining the operation of the Mass Spectrometry (MS) facility. To maintain, troubleshoot and perform basic repairs on the MS equipment. To devise, evaluate, modify and perform experiments and to provide oversight of the facility. The MS Specialist reports to the Director, Research and Partnerships and takes direction from the Director, Organized Research Unit (ORU), Centre for Research in Mass Spectrometry.
 
Responsibilities:
MASS SPECTROMETRY SUPPORT:
Maintains and oversees the effective and efficient operation of the MS facility. Maintains and oversees MS support equipment including uninterruptible power supplies, pumps, nitrogen generator, gas tanks, cooling water circulators, and computer work stations. Troubleshoots and perform preliminary diagnosis of electronic malfunction and minor repairs to MS instruments including file and database maintenance. Schedules the use of spectrometers by internal and external users. Provides instruction to staff, students and users regarding the operation of equipment. Acts as a first point of contact for the MS facilities. Liaises with potential users and facilitates and connects industry partners with York researchers for collaborative research opportunities. Addresses and resolves issues with internal and external clients. Conducts MS analyses using appropriate experiments for small and large molecules in either biological or chemical systems. Introduces new experiments based on general parameters provided by the Researcher and provides MS analyses for internal and external agencies. Percentage of time: 75%

ADMINISTRATIVE AND RESEARCH SUPPORT:
Oversees scheduling of the MS instruments. Maintains MS accounts for parts, supplies and servicing. Works closely with Director to develop plans to address priorities of the MS facility and implements the same. Works with faculty members on funding applications to support new uses, upgrades or repairs of instruments. Interprets MS spectra for both internal and external clients and prepares reports dealing with spectrum interpretation and proteomics results. Initiates invoice for billing to external MS users and customers. Completes journal transfers for payment by internal users. Reconciles accounts on a monthly basis. Purchases consumables and supplies as required; orders parts and equipment as approved by the Director. Works with the faculty’s Dean’s Office to develop and implement the business plan for revenue generation to support ongoing maintenance and operation of the MS facility such as reserves facilities, arranges billing system and invoices clients. Liaises with external clients to communicate costs and fee structure for access to the MS facility. Reviews and revises the fee for service structure to reflect fee changes in collaboration with the Director, Research and Partnerships. Works with faculty members, the Director and the Office of the Vice-President Research and Innovation to develop contracts and agreements with external contractors and define terms of contracts such as timelines, deliverables; updates and reports frequencies and billings. Maintains an awareness of recent developments in MS spectrometry by monitoring the literature and interacting with experts in the field through attendance of conferences, seminars, instrument demonstrations and user workshops. Work closely with applicable administrators to develop operations policies and procedures and implements the same. Adheres to all health, safety and environmental guidelines, policies and procedures; informs users of the use and safe handling of equipment in the facility. When required, applies to government agencies for appropriate permits and licenses for the analysis of restricted substances. Percentage of time: 20%

Education:
Post-graduate degree in Chemistry. Specific knowledge in Physical Chemistry and Mass Spectrometry is required.
 
Experience:
2 years’ practical experience with MS instruments and other Chemistry-related instrumentation. Experience with Physical Chemistry experiments dealing with calorimetry, charge transfer and gas-phase reactions. Must have experience with PD and UNIX platforms. Experience with experiments of small/large molecules and biological MS samples, high-resolution proteomic investigations; all types of LC-MS experiments.
 
Skills:
Familiarity with Mass Spectrometry and Liquid Chromatography. Demonstrated skill/ability in the following areas: Hands-on instrument servicing/repair and modifications; software upgrade; working efficiently under pressure, working independently and following tasks to completion; ability to set priorities and coordinate workflow; deal courteously and effectively with diverse personalities; excellent oral and written communication skills. WHMIS Level II and Bio-safety training.

Job Specifications:
Summer Hours: Same as above.
Overtime Availability in this Position: Overtime may be available throughout the year.
Vacation Restriction Definition: Based on operational requirements, vacation may be restricted mid-August to September; mid-January to March.
