Purpose:
The Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion strives to build a respectful,
equitable, diverse and
inclusive community at York by advancing, promoting, and upholding human rights
at the
University in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and York U's
policies. The
Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion provides current York University
students, faculty and staff with the following services:
Policy Guidance: Supports York University's administration in developing and
implementing
policies, practices, guidelines and procedures.
Education: Educates the York community on their human rights responsibilities and
obligations and related human rights issues.
Case Resolution: Receives and processes human rights concerns and complaints
brought
forward by York students, faculty and staff.
Research: Researches human rights issues for use in its policy advice and
educational
programming.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Senior Advisor, Case Resolution:
Reviews and resolves a complex caseload of human rights enquiries,
consultations, and
complaints in a timely and fair manner through various alternate dispute resolution
methods,
initiating formal complaints. Performs local adjudication functions and conducts
investigations in accordance with the principles of administrative law. Develops
and delivers
education programming on human rights issues, policies and procedures
throughout the
university community in consultation with the Executive Director and Advisors,
Education
and Communications. Contributes to the development of policies, procedures and
guidelines. |

Knowledge:
Developed knowledge about human rights legislation and regulations including the Ontario
Human Rights Code, Bill 132, OHSA, AODA, etc. In-depth knowledge of emerging human
rights related issues including sexual violence, unconscious bias, cultural competency,
systemic racism, and universal/inclusive design. Significant knowledge and application of adult
learning principles. Demonstrated awareness and understanding of cultural competency,
equity, diversity, inclusion, marginalization, power dynamics and their role in complaints
resolution. Significant knowledge about human rights legislation and its applications along with
knowledge about administrative law in general. Substantial knowledge of and experience with
principles of procedural fairness and natural justice. |

Education:
Recognized Masters degree in related discipline (equity, human rights law, administrative law)
or J.D. / LL.B. Training to conduct investigations and collect and assess evidence or
equivalent experience and training. Alternative dispute resolution training and/or a certificate in
dispute resolution or related discipline a strong asset. French an asset. |

Experience:
5 years progressive experience directly related to the fields of human rights, civil litigation, or
administrative law. 5 years experience in mediation and alternative dispute resolution
mechanisms. Experience in conducting complex investigations, collecting evidence, applying
evidentiary principles and writing reports. Demonstrated track record of successful case
management and dispute resolution. 2 years experience public speaking, developing and
delivering educational workshops, and seminars for diverse audiences. Experience working
independently and without close supervision. |

the Centre's mandate. Understanding of key systemic discrimination and challenges facing
diverse communities in Ontario. Demonstrated commitment to client service and quality
principles in service delivery. Demonstrated understanding of and experience (preferably
lived experience) with issues affecting disadvantaged and diverse groups. Superior culturally
competent interpersonal skills in writing and oral communication. Ability to handle
emotionally charged complainants/respondents. Strong group presentation and facilitation
skills. Ability to react quickly to changing situations, manage multiple priorities, meet tight
timelines and prioritize issues, carrying a substantial caseload. Excellent written and oral
communications skills. Excellent organizational, administrative and time management skills.
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. Demonstrated
computing skills, including word processing, database management and computerized
spreadsheets. |
