Purpose:
The Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies (LA&PS) is the largest Faculty
at York University currently with over 22,000 undergraduate and graduate students,
and almost 100 programs delivered through 25 Departments, Schools and Colleges.

With an innovative and outcomes focused approach, the Director, Strategic
Research & Partnerships, LA&PS is responsible for advising and working closely
with the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies & Research to develop and implement a
vision and provide strategic leadership for research initiatives and services in the
Faculty. The Director, Strategic Research & Partnerships will make significant
contributions with regards to research planning, directing the support of grant
application and prestigious awards and nominations development, and developing
and enhancing research and financial administration processes.
The Director, Strategic Research & Partnerships is responsible for the coordination,
planning, development, implementation, evaluation and promotion of research
services for LA&PS. This dynamic leader will champion a service delivery model for
research, establish service level standards that meet the needs of faculty members,
and develop policies and standard operating procedures to ensure the LA&PS
Research Unit operates in a highly efficient and effective manner. The incumbent
develops strategies for enhancing and implementing knowledge mobilization
activities. In collaboration with the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies & Research,
the Director, Strategic Research & Partnerships will oversee the development of
strategy for LA&PS on research policy matters, including the communications
strategy for research, and plays a liaison role between Faculty research, Faculty
fundraising, Faculty communications and Faculty international initiatives. Working
closely with the Dean’s Executive team, and other University offices, the Director
serves as an advisor and strategist for the Faculty on strategic partnerships and
outreach strategies that range from local to global and as a liaison with government
on matters related to research funding. |

Education:
A PhD in a related field is required, plus specialized training in conducting research, and
research administration and accounting, and grant application/proposal writing and
preparation. |

Experience:
Minimum 5-7 years’ experience with progressive responsibility in research
administration and management in a research-intensive University, with
demonstrated success in working with and advising senior academic administrators.
Must have an academic research background with experience in publishing papers
and grant-writing. Extensive experience successfully interpreting University policies
and procedures and navigating its’ complex influence and authority structures,
particularly as it relates to research administration and accounting. Experience
reviewing and negotiating legal agreements, directing relevant communication and
marketing activities, managing, forecasting and planning budgets and promoting
knowledge mobilization activities. Experience managing and leading staff in a
unionized environment and exposure to strategic research planning and process
development is also required. Experience with process improvement, project
management, change management and event coordination is preferred. |

Skills:
Excellent interpersonal and relationship development/management skills. In depth
knowledge of University research and the Canadian research funding environment,
governmental and non-governmental, particularly related to large-scale funding
opportunities (>$1M). Understanding of international funding opportunities (e.g. NIH
programs) are an asset. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent
judgment, initiative, planning, solutions-focused problem-solving and organizational
skills; strong analytical and report writing skills; ability to exercise tact and discretion
and to maintain confidentiality. Demonstrated integrity, professionalism and
commitment to excellence, with effective process improvement and change
management skills. Proven ability to construct and analyze multi-year budgets and
administer associated processes, preferably for large scale funding applications and
grants. Attention to detail and comfort with ambiguity and competing priorities;
flexible and adaptable to meet emerging deadlines and changing priorities.
Demonstrated strong leadership, coaching and team building skills in order to foster,
motivate and support an environment of high performance, inclusion, trust and
collaboration; excellent facilitation and presentation skills. Proficient with MS Office
365 (i.e. Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Research Information
Management, budget reporting/management and expense claim submission
systems. |
