Purpose:
The Faculty of Science houses administrative departments, teaching and research
facilities. The buildings, which include Bethune College, Chemistry, Farquharson,
Life Sciences, Lumbers, Petrie Science and Ross, serve many diverse teaching and
complex research needs, some of which impose unique and specific demands on
the building infrastructure. Research space includes numerous laboratories that
house specialized equipment and/or work involving biomedical and environmental
hazards.
The Technical Services unit consist of the Science Stores, Machine Shop,
Electronics Shop and Glassblowing Shop that provide machine shop technological
solutions for design and construction of various specialized research and teaching
instrumentation - electronic, electrical and mechanical; repairs, maintenance,
modifications and installations of new or existing equipment, testing, calibration and
consultations for faculty, students and staff.
Reporting to the Director, Safety & Business Operations, this position is responsible
for the leadership, administration and provision of technical services to the Faculty’s
teaching and research operations. The incumbent manages and provides technical
leadership to staff in the unit, oversees the technical group activities and acts a
coordinator and technical consultant to academic staff and students. The incumbent
is responsible for planning, budget control and administration of the Faculty’s
Technical Services operations. |

Education:
Community College training in Mechanical Engineering Technology or Electronics.
Some business and supervisory skills training. |
|
Experience:
Minimum 7 years working in a machine shop and 3 years of supervisory experience.
CAD/CAM experience. |
|
Skills:
Demonstrated expertise in at least one of the following: Machining, electronics and
glass blowing plus experience with inventory management.
Thorough knowledge of current health and safety standards and principles and their
practical applications in shop environment.
Proven leadership skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team.
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills including flexibility, discretion, tact and
listening.
Excellent organizational and management skills.
Proven ability to exercise good judgement and initiative.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Some knowledge of purchasing and budgeting and contract processes. |
