Purpose:
Reporting to the Manager, Network Development, the Senior Network
Designer provides technical focus and direction for development and
upgrade projects pertaining to the University’s network infrastructure
and related systems and services at York University. The Senior
Network Designer serves as an expert technical resource and
consultant for the planning, architectural design, development, testing
and maintenance of networking services and infrastructure throughout
the University. The Senior Network Designer provides guidance on
standards and architecture for the design, administration and operation
of the network and related services. |

NETWORKING PROTOCOLS AND STANDARDS – ADVANCED
LEVEL: IP version 4, IP version 6, TCP, Unicast Routing: OSPF, BGP,
MPLS, LDP, mBGP, Multicast routing: IGMP, PIM, DNS and
DNSSEC,DHCP, IEEE 802.1, IEEE 802.3, IEEE 802.11,
GRE,DiffServ, QoS. INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: Optical transport
networks (xWDM, ROADM, SONET, etc.). NETWORKING TOOLS AND
TECHNOLOGIES – ADVANCED LEVEL: AAA (TACACS+,
RADIUS), Cisco IOS, Cisco IOS-XR, Cisco Catalyst Switches,Cisco
Catalyst 6500 Firewall Service Module, Cisco ASR 9000 routers,
Cisco Nexus 1000v, NX-OS,Tipping Point IPS, Core Controller,
SSL/TLS, Syslog, SIEM,SSH, SNMP, SIP telephony. INTERMEDIATE
LEVEL: Bluecat Networks Proteus, RRDtool / Cacti / MRTG, RANCID,
Netdisco. OPERATING SYSTEMS: ADVANCED LEVEL: Linux/Unix .
INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: Windows, Mac OS X, VMware vSphere v4+,
Microsoft Hyper-V. Language PROGRAMMING
LANGUAGES AND SOFTWARE TOOLS: BASIC LEVEL -
Perl or other scripting languages, C, UNIX shell
programming, SQL , Visual Basic for Applications, XML
UML.
DIRECTORY SERVICES : BASIC LEVEL – LDAP, Active Directory.
APPLICATIONS: ADVANCED LEVEL: Web Browser, Excel, Visio.

Education:
Relevant University Degree e.g., Computer Science, Computer
Systems, Engineering.
Industry certifications an asset, especially CISCO, ITIL v3, CISSP, SANS. |
|
Experience:
7 years of recent related industry experience e.g., large enterprise,
network service provider.
Strong network management knowledge and experience including:
managed switches, wireless LAN, data/voice networking protocols,
data/voice network routing, security certificates, VLANs, firewall
management.
Experienced in implementing and running resilient/fault-tolerant
networks and network services.
Proven experience in IT infrastructure planning and development,
project management, structured analytical methods and policy
development; can demonstrate through recent experience a strong
ability to troubleshoot network performance issues.
Experience supervising staff, training and teaching (individual or lab
environment) is preferred. |

Skills:
Expert level knowledge and experience with Linux is highly desirable.
Knowledge and experience with writing and troubleshooting PERL
and Shell scripts is an asset.
Exceptional ability in requirements gathering and translating user
needs into system requirements.
Understands the importance of and proven track record of operating
within problem, change, capacity management and disaster recovery
IT disciplines.
Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in order to:
effectively interact with both technical and non-technical users; to
respond to inquiries from all levels of the University hierarchy; to
write clear, concise documentation; to direct, persuade, influence
and train.
Ability to work independently, to set priorities and to work effectively
under pressure; able to multi-task and meet short/long term
deadlines; excellent organizational skills required.
Ability and willingness to work effectively as a member of a team
(internal and/or external resources); ability to work and communicate
with the external community in a professional and business-like
manner.
Strong service orientation coupled with an ability to assess the
operational significance of a problem and to set priorities
accordingly.
Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy; maintain confidentiality; ability
to deal calmly and effectively with technical and non-technical
people.
Exceptional analytical, evaluative and technical problem solving
skills.
Ability to attend accurately to detail.
Ability and willingness to keep abreast of technological
developments with strong ability to adapt quickly to rapidly changing
