Purpose:

Accountable to the Senior Director, Alumni Relations, the Manager, Community Relations (MCR) is a leadership role in the Alumni Relations Office, which is part of the Division of Advancement. The incumbent is responsible for the overall direction, strategy, management, coordination, execution and assessment of all community relations (CR) activities within the Division and ensures that they advance both the Division’s goals and the University’s overall mission and academic plan. In collaboration with faculty, staff and other on-campus partners, the MCR initiates, develops and facilitates strategic relationships with community organizations, local networks/associations, local/regional government departments, private sector organizations and other education sector partners for mutually-beneficial purposes. The incumbent assumes a lead role in the Division’s Town and Gown activities to engage with our neighbourhood as an institutional partner. This includes collaborating with colleagues from across campus to ensure a coordinated approach to neighbourhood projects and issues. S/he has overall managerial responsibility for the York Youth Connection Summer Day camp, and provides leadership to the camp’s human resources, financial management, registration, communications, and risk management. The Manager, Community Relations is responsible for the full supervision of the Visitor and Community Relations Assistant as well as YUSA-2 and YUTA employees as required.
 
Education:
University degree in marketing, communications, business, public relations or related discipline.
 
Experience:
A minimum of 5 years experience in a community relations and/or community development role, ideally with some experience within an educational and non-profit environment, and managing staff in a unionized environment.
 
Skills:
The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in written and oral communication skills including the ability to prepare and deliver engaging presentations and grant applications. The ability to prepare and forecast operating budgets for Community Relations unit. S/he will have demonstrated experience in providing strong leadership, project management and community development skills. A strong record in building sustainable, strategic relationships within the University’s and external communities and proven ability to work successfully with a wide range of stakeholders including, students, faculty, staff, community groups and private / public-sector organizations. The incumbent will have strong interpersonal skills: ability to deal courteously and effectively with people; be aware of political sensitivities, demonstrate initiative and flexibility, and utilize influencing and negotiation skills to develop strategic activities. S/he will have a demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and initiative in providing advice and appropriately directing/resolving problems. S/he will also have a demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle highly sensitive issues with diplomacy and tact. Proven ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure of high volume of work, ability to work on several projects simultaneously and to work independently and as part of a small team. She/he will have demonstrated managerial and administrative skills, and develop and work with a team of volunteers. Advanced knowledge of productivity software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e-mail, etc.) and social media tools.
