Purpose:
Reporting to the Assistant Manager, Service Delivery, Systems Management Services the incumbent provides entry-level technical support for a variety of UIT maintained servers and applications. Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, the incumbent is responsible for the maintenance and availability of systems and applications.
 
Education:
A relevant university degree, e.g., Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology.
 
Experience:
1 to 2 years of recent Unix/Linux System Administrative experience in a large and diverse computing environment.
 
Skills:
Proficiency with most UNIX commands and utilities; Familiarity with most basic system administration tools and processes, e.g., system installation and configuration, printing systems, fundamentals of security, third-party software installation; Fundamental understanding of UNIX-based operating systems, e.g., understands job controls, soft and hard links, distinctions between the kernel and the shell; Familiarity with networked/distributed computing environment concepts, e.g., understands basic routing concepts, can add a workstation to a network, and can configure NFS; Ability to write scripts in some language, e.g., Perl or a shell; General knowledge of Internet applications, e.g., Telnet, ftp, ssh, web servers; Knowledge of UNIX workstation, server, and peripherals hardware. Excellent communication skills in order to effectively interact with both technical and non-technical users (written and oral); excellent analytical and evaluative skills; ability to work independently, set priorities and work effectively under pressure; ability to perform effectively as part of a team; ability to exercise tact and diplomacy; ability to deal calmly and effectively with people; ability to multi-task and meet long/short term deadlines; ability to attend accurately to detail; good aptitude to evaluate, implement and modify computer systems; ability and willingness to keep abreast of technological developments; excellent organizational skills; ability to maintain confidentiality.
