Reporting to the Executive Director, Counselling and Disability Services (CDS), the Manager, Mental Health Disability Services is responsible for managing disability counseling and accommodation support services for students with mental health disabilities within CDS and the associated budget for the MHDS unit. The Manager’s primary objective is leading his/her team in the provision of effective, timely and accountable professional support, which is based on student-focused programs and services and which helps students realize their personal and academic potential in order to maximally benefit from their University experience. Under the Leadership of the Executive Director CDS, the Manager of MHDS functions as part of the CDS Management Team working collaboratively with the managers of the other CDS disability services and the Director, Personal and Crisis Counselling and Learning Skills Services to ensure consistency in high standards of policy and service delivery within CDS.
 
Education:
Masters of Social Work or Master’s degree in a related field (e.g. Clinical and/or Counselling Psychology or Master of Education) with a specialization in mental health disabilities. Registration with College of Psychologists of Ontario or Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
 
Experience:
5 to 7 years counselling experience with adolescents and adults with mental health disabilities; minimum of one-two years of experience working in a supervisory/managerial capacity in the mental health field; experience developing and leading programs and services for individuals with mental health disabilities; preference will be given to those candidates with experience working in a post-secondary or other unionized environment.
 
Skills:
Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, relationship building and analytical skills are required. Strong ability to provide leadership and manage change in a professional team, under pressure of resource constraints and deadlines. Exercises accuracy, good judgment, tact diplomacy, efficiency and sensitivity in all interactions. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable, with a commitment to excellence and innovation, and proven ability to achieve results. An appreciation of academic values, thorough understanding of the principles of counselling,and a commitment to student development. Strong understanding of mental health disabilities and their impact on academic performance and social interaction. High degree of familiarity with practices, principles, legislation and the legal issues pertaining to the rights of persons with disabilities under Canadian and Ontario Human Rights legislation; knowledge of assistive technology (e.g. Kurzweil 3000, Dragon Naturally Speaking, IBM ViaVoice, TextHelp, Inspiration as asset. Proficient with MS Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and web based mail (i.e. Lotus Notes). Proven financial and human resources management, and database experience (e.g. Clockwork and EReports) is preferred.
