Purpose:
The Senior Systems Administrator is responsible for system architecture design and virtualization. This includes recommending, both hardware and software solutions to meet business needs, evaluating, installing, modifying, maintaining, testing and documenting software and/or hardware in order to maintain a comprehensive Systems Management solution to the York community. The position is the senior technician for virtualization and one of the first points of contact for the SMS team and other technical teams across campus, focusing on problem resolution, training, documentation and overall expert knowledge, ensuring set policies and procedures are created, implemented, followed and met with regards to virtualization.
 
Education:
A University degree in Computer Science or Management Information Systems.
 
Experience:
5 years of server administration of which 3 years should be specific to VMWare administration.
 
Skills:
The incumbent must have solid experience with system infrastructure and design accompanied by an understanding of business processes. This is necessary when working with users to understand system needs and build requirement around needs. Knowledge of business functions is also important, as is the ability to communicate with other employees in both technical and non-technical roles Communications hardware (e.g. routers, switches, repeaters), management tools; MUST DEMONSTRATE ADVANCED SKILLS IN THE FOLLOWING: OPERATING SYSTEMS: Microsoft Windows (XP and 7), Windows Server (2003 to 2008), Microsoft Active Directory; Basic Understanding of DATABASE MANAGEMENT: Oracle, Microsoft SQL, ODBC Interface; APPLICATION PACKAGES: Word Processing (e.g. Word), Spreadsheets (e.g. Excel), Schedulers (e.g. iCAL, Lotus Notes), Email (e.g. Netscape, Outlook, Pine, Lotus Notes), Problem Tracking (e.g. BMC Remedy), Basic Understanding of COMMUNICATIONS: Communications software (e.g. Citrix, Cisco VPN, Multicasting), Communications Protocols (e.g. TCPIP); UTILITIES: Passport York/Maya Admin, Symantec Net Backup, Active Directory. Must demonstrate understanding and some skills (based on level of support) for Application software installed on the managed Servers.
