Duration: Temporary Full-Time
Hours: Typically 8:30am to 4:30 pm, however hours may vary depending on recruitment activities. Individual work schedules may need to be shifted in order to meet operational requirements.
Position Start Date: January 2, 2014   Position End Date: December 20, 2014
 
Purpose:
Undergraduate Student Advisors contribute to student success, satisfaction and retention by providing academic program advising for continuing students across all Faculty of Fine Arts degrees and certificates. As part of a team, in cooperation with University services and with direction from the Director, this position fosters and realizes a student-centric climate, service excellence and continuous enhancement of student services and improved retention.
 
Education:
University degree or equivalent such as completion of a College Diploma with courses in Student Affairs, Student Services, Business Administration or related plus 2 years practical experience in student advising in addition to the required minimum number of years of relevant work experience listed below.
 
Experience:
Minimum 2 years experience including academic program advising experience such as interpreting, applying and relaying complex policies and legislation; experience advising within a developmental framework on a variety of matters related to academic programs and assessing student academic records, in a student services area.

Well developed skills in relationship building. Excellent active listening skills. Ability to exercise sound judgment in evaluating individual situations and to solving problems cooperatively Excellent attention to detail. Ability to use / apply a wide range of resources and/or strategies in complex situations. Ability to work independently and/or cooperatively to accomplish objectives in an environment of competing priorities and constant interruptions. Exercising initiative and working as an effective member of a team to achieve and support unit goals. Ability to contribute to decisions as a member of a team and to support outcomes. Solid decision-making skills. Time management and organizational skills to simultaneously handle conflicting priorities, multi-task and meet deadlines. Flexibility and adaptability to support the needs of a changing student body and to adapt to new or changing operational processes, procedures and application tools. Ability to maintain confidentiality and deal with difficult and sensitive situations. Good written communication skills. DEMONSTRATED COMPUTER SKILLS INCLUDING: Student records system/database (SIS or equivalent). Basic spreadsheets (MS Excel). Intermediate Wordprocessing software (MS Word). E-mail (Lotus notes). Internet, ability to navigate web resources. Ability to use online resources and applications/tools.
