Purpose:
Reporting to the Manager, Network Development, the incumbent provides support for a variety of UIT maintained systems, applications and services and is responsible for network related projects and tasks aimed at ensuring both current and future availability and reliability of the University’s network and its resources.
 
Education:
University degree in Computer Science and Cisco CCNA certification, working towards a CCNP certification, or equivalent experience.
 
Experience:
5 years of direct network and system administration experience in a heterogeneous computing environment.
 
Skills:
Excellent analytical and evaluative skills; good written communication skills; good organizational skills. Excellent oral communication skills to elicit accurate information and respond to inquiries. Working effectively as a member of a team; exercising tact and diplomacy; dealing calmly and effectively with people; able to maintain confidentiality. Meeting short/long term deadlines; setting priorities and working effectively under pressure of high volume. Evaluating, implementing and modifying computerized systems, attending accurately to details. Willingness to learn new computer systems; fundamental understanding of a Linux/UNIX based operating system. Proficiency with most Linux/UNIX commands and utilities; familiarity with Linux/UNIX system administrative tools and processes; e.g. system installation and configuration, fundamentals of security, installing 3rd party software. Familiarity with networked/distributed computing environment concepts; e.g. understands advanced routing concepts, protocols and best practices. Ability to write scripts in administrative language (e.g. Tcl/Tk, Perl or a shell); programming experience in various languages including C/C++, Java. Good knowledge of Internet applications (e.g. tftp, ftp, ssh, http). SKILLS MATRIX: PROGRAMMING & SCRIPTING LANGUAGES: (ADVANCED LEVEL): Variety of languages e.g. Perl, PHP, C, C++, Java, HTML, Mason, Shells (C, KSH, Bourne), Expect, Tcl/Tk COMMUNICATIONS PROTOCOLS, SERVICES & HARDWARE: (ADVANCED LEVEL) Addressing Protocols and Software – DNS, DHCP, BOOTP, BIND; LAN technologies – EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, VLANs, STP, 802.3, 802.11a/b/g/n, 802.3af/at; Network Management Protocols and Tools – SNMP, Netflow/sFlow, RANCID, MRTG/Cacti, Nagios, NetDisco, Cisco Prime, EzRF, etc.; Network Hardware - Routers, Switches, Wireless Access Points, and Access Controllers from various vendors including: Cisco Systems Catalyst 2960, Catalyst 3750, Catalyst 3850, Catalyst 6500, series products, Wi-Fi networking products by both Cisco Systems and Meru Networks (INTERMEDIATE LEVEL): Network Capture tools - Wireshark, Kismet, THG, Observer, tcpdump; Network and Transport – IPv4, IPv6, MPLS, TCP, etc.; TCP/IP Services - HTTP(S), SSH, NTP, SMTP, TFTP, FTP, SCP. (BASIC LEVEL); WLAN survey and design tools – e.g. Ekahau Site Survey, AirMagnet Survey. NETWORK SECURITY: (INTERMEDIATE LEVEL): Tools and technologies – Firewalls, VPN, ACLs, SSL/TLS, Digital Certificates, etc.; Authentication protocols and technologies – e.g. 802.1x, RADIUS, Active Directory, LDAP, Freeradius, packetfence, etc. APPLICATION SOFTWARE: (INTERMEDIATE LEVEL): Microsoft Office, Visio. (BASIC LEVEL): Microsoft Project, VMware Workstation/Fusion, SAS or SPSS. OPERATING SYSTEMS: (BASIC LEVEL): VMware ESXi. (INTERMEDIATE LEVEL): Linux, Windows XP/7/8, Mac OS X.
