The Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a 3-year Contractually Limited Appointment teaching stream position in Performance Creation, Playwriting, and Devising at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, to commence July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses; and to provide creative educational leadership in enhancing teaching and learning through curricular and pedagogical innovation in the classroom and at the level of the programs. We are particularly interested in colleagues who bring experience in facilitating diversity within their teaching and curricular development. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
A PhD (or near completion) or other forms of advanced academic and professional experience (such as an MFA/MA or equivalent) with a substantial record of professional experience in performance creation, playwriting and/or devising with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) artists and companies is required. Additional teachable strengths in dramaturgy, movement for the stage, improvisation, community practice, Critical Response Process, immersive and telematic performance, and decolonizing pedagogies, is strongly preferred. Previous experience teaching studio, seminar, or lecture classes in playwriting, devised theatre, performance creation, global theatre and performance history, and/or contemporary Canadian performance is also strongly preferred.

The successful candidate will demonstrate clear potential for excellence in teaching university-level courses through: their teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education, technology enhanced learning and community-based learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to pedagogy and student success and the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to Theatre teaching, learning and program design. Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
