The Department of Theatre in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design at York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a 3-year Contractually Limited position in Acting and Directing at the rank of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, to commence July 1, 2021. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver core curriculum to our students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; supervise studio shows and Theatre@York productions; supervise thesis work; fulfill service responsibilities in administrative and committee work; and provide creative educational leadership in enhancing teaching and learning through curricular and pedagogical innovation in the classroom and at the level of the programs. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

An MFA in Theatre with a specialization in Acting and Directing is required (or MFA equivalent such as BFA with a substantial record of recent professional experience) in one or more of the following areas: acting for the stage, acting for the camera, and directing for the stage; and significant experience teaching in at least two of these areas. A substantial record of recent professional experience collaborating with IBPOC (Indigenous, Black, People of Colour) artists and companies is required. Additional teachable strengths in audition techniques, improvisation, devised theatre, performance creation, and business practice in the fields of acting and directing would be strongly preferred.
The successful candidate will demonstrate clear potential for excellence in teaching university-level courses through: their teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education, technology enhanced learning and community-based learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to pedagogy and student success and the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to Theatre teaching, learning and program design. Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred.
