Contractually Limited Appointment, Black Cultures in the Americas, Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University
The Department of Humanities, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a one-year teaching stream contractually limited appointment at the level of Sessional Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream in Black Cultures in the Americas to commence July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
The Department seeks a candidate who is qualified to teach broadly in Black Cultures of the Americas within the Black Canadian Studies Certificate. A PhD, or PhD near completion, in Humanities or a related field is required by the start of the appointment. Candidates must demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in teaching courses on Black experiences and Black cultures in the Americas from the time of slavery to the present day, with a focus on Black Canadian, African American, and Caribbean literatures, histories, and cultures. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a large, General Education course, which consists of lecturing, leading two tutorial groups, and managing a team of Teaching Assistants. Applicants must demonstrate an interdisciplinary humanities focus that combines a wide range of disciplines and fields, including literature, music, history, film, visual art, gender and women’s studies, and theoretical debates in Black Studies. In addition, the candidate will be expected to teach upper-level courses in Black Literatures and Cultures in Canada and Imagining Slavery and Freedom.
Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; the teaching dossier; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of reference.
