The Department of Social Science, Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University invites highly qualified applicants for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in the Criminology Program in Race, Racialization, and Crime at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023.

Candidate Qualifications:
• This opportunity is open to qualified individuals who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent (for example Africans and African heritage from the Caribbean, Americas, Europe). • Degree: PhD in Criminology or a related interdisciplinary program by July 1, 2023 is required.
Research/Scholarly Expertise:
• Areas of scholarship may include: policing; colonialism; urban crime; youth crime; carceral politics and/or abolitionism; critical race theory; or other areas that demonstrate the intersection of racialization and criminalization.
• Clearly articulated program of critical, interdisciplinary research in race, racialization, and crime.
• Engaged in outstanding, innovative, and, as appropriate, externally funded scholarship.
• Research excellence or promise thereof, as evident in: the cover letter; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications); conference presentations; awards and accolades; and strong letters of recommendations.
Teaching:
• The appointment will carry a teaching load of 2.5 courses or the equivalent and the successful candidate will be expected to teach interdisciplinary courses in their area of specialization as well as core courses in the Criminology Program, and to contribute to curricular development towards enhancing the program’s offerings.
• Excellence or the promise of excellence in interdisciplinary teaching, as evident in: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations; teaching evaluations; strong letters of reference.
• Ability to teach in an interdisciplinary program
• Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
• Preference will be given to candidates with strength in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning.
Additional:
• Priority will be given to scholars attending to anti-Black racism in Canadian criminal justice contexts.
