The Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream tenure-track appointment in Linguistics at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2023. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

A PhD in Linguistics (or equivalent) is required by July 1, 2023. Applicants should have a clearly articulated program of research and a demonstrated record of excellence or promise of excellence in scholarly research and teaching.

We are seeking a candidate with expertise in quantitative approaches to Linguistics, with a strong background in sociolinguistics. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Department’s undergraduate Linguistics and Speech and Language Sciences program through curricular development of courses in statistics, research design and methodology, big data analysis and programming for Linguistics. The candidate will also be expected to develop graduate courses in quantitative research methods and analysis.

We seek to appoint an outstanding researcher as part of the university’s strategic commitment to accelerate York’s progress toward being recognized nationally and internationally as a top comprehensive, research-intensive university. The Dean is able to offer enhanced research support for the first three years of this appointment.

The successful candidate will be expected to engage in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level. Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence or promise of research excellence of a recognized international caliber as demonstrated in the research statement; a record of publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals in the field; presentations at major conferences; awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.

The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching and the successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Evidence of excellence or promise of excellence in teaching will be provided through: the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; and strong letters of recommendation from three references.

At the undergraduate level, the prospective candidate must be able to teach courses in statistics, research design, elementary programming for Linguistics, as well as quantitative approaches to sociolinguistics. The ability to offer courses in Phonetics, Phonology, Syntax, Morphology, or Semantics, all from a generative perspective, would be an additional asset. At the graduate level, the ability to teach courses in research design and sociolinguistics is desirable.
