Department Chair, Department of Design, School of Arts Media Performance and Design, York University

The Design department, School of Arts Media Performance and Design at York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a professorial stream appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level and as Department Chair specializing in User Experience Design or Service Design, to commence July 1, 2023. The Chair role is assigned for a 3-year, renewable term and typically rotates among tenured faculty members in the Department. The salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The Department of Design is a leader in design education in Canada with newly reimagined curricula in both its undergraduate and graduate programs to prepare design professionals for success in both industry and academia. We are looking to further develop our industry-leading user experience design focus, while delivering sustainable process-oriented systems and products relevant to commercial and social needs.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute and collaborate effectively across the department and with students in our areas of Interaction Design, Information Design, and Visual Communication Design, as well as to collaborate across campus.

Candidate Qualifications:
• Degree: A PhD or PhD equivalent typically an MDES/MA/MFA with a substantial record in professional or academic experience related to User Experience Design and/or Service Design is required along with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching.

• Research/Practice Expertise:
o Clearly articulated program of research or research creation, or professional practice and specialization in User Experience Design and/or Service Design.
o Engaged in outstanding, innovative, and as appropriate, externally funded research at the highest level.
o Research excellence of a recognized international calibre, as evidenced in the research statement; publications (or forthcoming publications) with significant journals and books in the field; presentations at major conferences; exhibitions and other research creation outputs, awards and accolades; and strong recommendations from referees of high standing.
o Evidence of collaborative leadership to help integrate and enhance ongoing research in the department.
o Evidence of ability to develop collaborations and build partnerships that create opportunities at York University in shaping new directions in the growth areas of User Experience Design and/or Service Design is an asset. The successful candidate will be encouraged to facilitate multidisciplinary connections within York University, for example with Lassonde School of Engineering, Schulich School of Business, School of Global Health, etc. and with researchers, governance bodies and community partners outside the university.

• Teaching:
o Minimum of 5 years teaching experience.
o Excellence in teaching, as evidenced in the teaching statement; teaching accomplishments and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning; teaching evaluations; strong letters of reference.
o Suitability for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies (i.e., completion of terminal degree), given that the position will involve graduate teaching and supervision in addition to teaching duties at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum
o Experience in facilitating equity, diversity, decolonization, and inclusion within curriculum is an asset.

• Administrative:
o We seek a leader who will take an action-oriented leadership in supporting and facilitating Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in departmental and institutional practices.
o Evidence of effective and impactful administrative experience. This could include but is not limited to experience in recruitment planning, academic scheduling, faculty teaching assignments, hiring sessional instructors, departmental budgeting, student advising and managing the undergraduate program assessment.
